Siberian Cat History

Siberians are a friendly, loyal, fearless, semi-longhair domestic breed originating in northern Russia and only recently imported to the United States. Currently, they are shown in championship classes around the world and are an established, recognized breed.

Reason for it's late entry to the American show circuit, was that soviet law had discouraged pet ownership due to housing and food shortages. It wasn't until the end of the cold war that cat clubs in Russia became fashionable again.

The Siberian cat arrived in Moscow and St. Petersburg, brought there by Russian emigrants leaving the cold inhospitable climate of the North. The Siberians we see in the United States come mostly from these cities.

Mainly because of the cold climate, the cats developed superior survival qualities such as longer hair (without a matting undercoat), thicker skin, with rain and snow repellent coats.

Their personality is very dog like, they defend their households, are loyal and very affectionate. These were all to become trademarks of the Siberian cat.
